Follow-up of our conference :

The conference took place last thursday, the panel of speakers was amazing...
European Parliament on the web...
The first speaker was Florent Le Montagner. “We have to adapt the message and be where people are”. Which social network are used by the European Parliament? Myspace, Flikr, Blog, Facebook and Twitter. He focused on Facebook used by the European Parliament in 22 languages. He expressed few figures... 3 videos – 500.000 views. Chat with President Buzek : 45minutes of dialogue, 151 reactions, 30 questions and 1 coffee. 90.476 fans (most of them from Italy and Germany) on the official page of EP and it is still running.  What about the ecosystem of EP’s life on the web? 74% of MEPs are on the web, 58% of them have a page on Facebook. Nowadays, there is a european society on the web called euro-geeks.
Make it attractive!
According to K Company who works with the European Commission, Laurent Kinet talked about differents steps :
Illustrate: Putting a human face.
Engage citizen: Individual voice from within the EU institutions. In a few words: interactive and socialcommunication.
EU >< US ? “Don’t compare United States and EU. Due to the legislation, we cannot reproduce the US model in Europe”.
Debate : is Europe overcautious?
Juan Arcas highlighted the fact that new media have an influence on the institutions and have modified the way their communicate. But Europe is overcautious. He gave the exemple of Lady Ashton’s team who tried to give way to a debate with citizens on the web, everything was under control...Perhaps too much. Unfortunately,  there was no dialogue because all information was filtered through. He added that MEPs need visibility and we have to distinguish institutions and MEPs especially in terms of visibility. It is still hard to hold its own against  newspapers. The communication’s main lines have changed for paperless and more interactivity.
EU bubble
Jean-Sébastien Lefebvre, european journalist : “We have a group of new media specialized in EU affairs but there are read by a few people – Eu bubble and people interested in EU affairs”. We should not be too technical, we have to change the way we inform EU citizens. The challenge is to inform in a new fashion way.
Are you convinced by the power of new media?
Tomas Miglierina argued that there are two main problems.: “Bloggers are journalists and there is a pervert effect. You cannot stop technological progress”. The most important thing is that professional code of ethics must remain.
R.I.P traditional media?
New media are complementary to traditional media.

    What about printed newspapers?

Do traditional media are going to kick the bucket? A lot of journalists are worried about the increasing success of internet. How many of you still buy printed newspapers?

    Books VS Internet

We are wondering how many students still make a research in a public library?  Do they prefer to surf on internet to find all the information they need?

According to an article on RTBF article de la télévision belge (6/3/2010), having an internet connexion does not mean to be able to make a research on the web :
ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles) made a survey on the ability of students to make a research on the web. 1600 students have been interviewed and 90 % of them had a connexion a home. But just 8/20 are able to deal with the information found on the web.

Does internet is a real threat?

    Marjolaine

Do you know about New Media Institute?

A new proof that new media became a big issue on our days is the setting up of an research institute for it.

The New Media Institute (NMI) is an American research and fact finding organization whose mission is to improve public understanding of issues surrounding the Internet and other forms new media communications. NMI works directly with the news media, researchers, academics, government and industry professionals and serves as a primary resource of facts, statistics and analysis (http://www.newmedia.org/)

Should we import this idea also in Europe? Does europeans follow the same trend like the americans?

Digital Media - Internet as the first reliable source of information !!

What do you think about this ?

People consider other people as the most reliable sources of information, more specifically their friends, acquaintances and colleagues, according to research conducted by InSites Consulting in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Local celebrities and politicians have the lowest scores. This trend is the same for Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK.

The internet has become the most important and most reliable medium to find and disseminate information.

    Most reliable source of information:
    - Internet: 50%
    - Television: 23%
    - Newspapers: 13%

7 out of 10 surfers read comments on websites about products and brands on the internet. In view of the considerable credibility we lend to each other's opinions, the feedback on websites about products and brands has become a huge influencer of purchase decisions. Even if we don't know these people personally, we still take into account a lot of these online reviews written by other surfers, according to InSites Consulting.

This research data is the result of market research conducted by InSites Consulting in September 2008. In addition to other brands and communication topics, sources and use of Word or Mouth were also mapped. In all, 900 consumers and 250 marketeers took part in this online survey in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. The figures are representative for the internet population of every country in terms of sex and age. (InSites Consulting, January 2009)
